| Imagine
. . . . . a festival that celebrates today to help save tomorrow.
A tomorrow where we use the technology we have now to generate
our own heat and power so we no longer fear the next electricity
bill.
A tomorrow when fuel costs finally persuade folks to treat driving
and flying as the luxury it once was but where modern technology
enables us to work locally and be effective globally.
A tomorrow where wilding of our national parks is seen as a solution
to water shortages and carbon sinks as well as a place to celebrate
nature’s rekindled diversity.
A tomorrow where we all start to appreciate our gardens not just
for their beauty but for what they can provide in food and even
fuel, a tomorrow that sees the results of enthusiastic planting
in our urban areas or corporate lawn deserts into beautiful gardens
that would shame the Elizabethans.
A tomorrow when none of the electricity generated in the nuclear
fission generator eyesore close by is needed by anyone in the District.
This is not a time of despair or denial. It is a time to realise
what we already have and learn how we can use our knowledge, innovation
and consideration to live a full and wonderful life that works with
our planet and not against it.
A peaceful prosperous healthy planet. This is our little bit towards
just that and Lancaster, with a cornucopia of thriving landscapes,
universities, and local businesses (including many superb ale houses)
is as beautiful a place to start as any.
The One Planet Festival folks would like to thank everyone
who took part last year and guaranteed our being able to build on
the success of 2008 in 2009. We have even more goodies in store
this year!

The Sustainability Exposition •

with music, speaker events, and local organic refreshments including
a local ale festival. Many stalls from local, regional and national
businesses, organisations, community groups, universities and schools
showcasing their energy efficiency and renewable energy products,
services and projects. Last year's garden installation (all plants
you could eat) was a huge (and heavy) success. This year's theme
will be the home with an eco-home installation planned as the Expo
centrepiece with stalls inside and out.
•
The Film festival •
with panel discussions hosted by the Dukes Cinema raising awareness
about climate change and sustainable practices. In 2009 it is planned
that the Dukes will also run a short film competition for young
people in the area. The winning film will be shown during the festival.
• The Music Festival
•

is hosted by existing venues in the City. Bicycle generators were
built to power the sound systems for acoustic acts, sustainable
tariffs and/or waste oil driven PAs were available for electric
acts.
• The
Speaker Events •
The Dukes Playhouse hosted talks and workshops through the weekend,
with keynote speakers, addressing the challenge of climate change
and proactive individual and community solutions and various speakers
were also presenting during the Sustainability Exposition.
